May 1949, Central China (Hua Zhong)MR was formed. In Marh 1955, it was divided into two, the Guangzhou MR and Wuhan MR.
Wuhan MR was disbanded in August 1985, and its troops stationed around Hubei province were assigned to Guangzhou MR. Contrary to popular believe, Guangzhou is not the nerve center of that military region, Hubei is. Hubei mountain region is home to PLA’s second Headquarter. In a event of nuclear, and the destruction of Beijing the PLA high command will continue to function inside those maintains.

PLA Navy: South China Sea fleet
Headquarters: Zhanjiang, Guangdong
South Sea Fleet (NanHai JianDui). The defense area of this fleet begins at Shantou, Guangdong Province, in the east and ends in Beihai, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Yulin, Hainan Province. Its maritime defense line is the longest due to its responsibilities for the huge expanse of waters in the South China Sea.
In December 15, 1949, PLA commissioned the Guangdong Military Region Ocean Defense HQ, with members staff members from the 173 Infantry Division, 4th Field Army’s 2nd training division, and 44 Army Group. It was renamed as South Sea Fleet in October 24, 1955
Since 1 July 1997, its control has extended to include the Hong Kong maritime areas. Due to the disputes over the Spratly and Paracel Islands, this fleet has been constantly strengthened. But it is still the smallest and weakest fleet in the PLAN with about 300 ships. In the event of war with Taiwan, the South Sea Fleet will be responsible for the blockade of southern Taiwan ports.
Vice Admiral Wang Yongguo also serve as vice cmdr of Guangzhou MR
