In April 1950, 2nd department of 4th field army logistic and command members
of the 12th Army group were assign to build a naval base in Qingdao, in September
1950, with additional staff from 2nd Field Army’s 11th Army group,
the Qingdao naval base was commissioned. In August 1960, it is officially
renamed as North Sea Fleet HQ. It is by far the most powerful Fleet within
the PLAN.
This fleet is responsible for the maritime security of the Yellow Sea and the Bo Sea (from the Yalu river to Lianyungang Port), which is the most important maritime defense line for China. Bo Sea is the oceanic gateway to the Beijing, it is only few dozen kilometers away from Tianjin, the third largest city in China, and a 100 kilometers from the capital.
Across the Yellow Sea are China’s two traditional foes: the Russians and the Japanese.
The North Sea area was the cradle of China’s modern navy and a number of sea battles were fought there. The PLAN has also devoted enormous resources to building it s North Sea Fleet and has made it the largest number of ships in the PLAN, over 400. It is home to PLAN’s Largest surface combatants, and nuclear submarines fleet.
Qingdao is the largest naval base in the Far East.
